So I watched the X-Factor for the first time ever this week. Wow, was I was impressed.
I saw about 4 acts and they were all, uh, interesting?
Every single performance was off key and noticeably flat. I have a good ear but this was totally obvious. I assumed that the notoriously "hard" judges would at least pick up on this, especially when it was some skinny little thing singing entirely through her throat in a nice nasal tone. She must've only hit about half the notes right, but they all praised her highly and complimented her on her uniqueness?! Then there was a really young boy, he sang way off key and the song was a little deeper than his range but again they loved it.
Even he-of-the-high-trousers, Simon Cowell, was filled with admiration for these scrappy Brits. I'd also like to note the horrific way the contestants are forced to stare creepily into the camera at all times, un-nerving and really does nothing for making them relatable.
Don’t get me wrong, I know it takes a lot of courage to get up and perform, I just don’t understand what the rush is all about. If these increasingly youthful contestants apparently have so much talent, then why can’t they sit them down with a decent vocal coach and train them for a few months before sticking them on reality shows?
I don't know, maybe my expectations were too high, but we've all witnessed the stunning Kelly Clarkson and my current obsession Carrie Underwood. Perhaps American Idol auditions are screened better. Or is it just because they've got millions more people to choose from so they can afford to be pickier?
Guess I avoided all these "Instant Fame Idol" shows all this time for a really good reason after all. Song of the day goes to the original Idol and the stunning talent that is K.C.
